EVENT INFO
Have you ever fancied learning sign language but didn’t know where to start? Here’s an opportunity to get an introduction to it through song!
Over 2 hours you’ll learn to sign two songs:
1) You Got It (From choir!)
2) Celebration (Kool & The Gang)
No prior signing experience is necessary - just try and make sure you’re familiar with the songs beforehand, turn up with your hands (they’re pretty important) and we’re off! Both songs are perfect starter songs to learn to sign and we’ll have a lot of fun along the way.
Jeanette joined choir in January - you may have seen her in rehearsals signing The Rose and if you were at the craft fair gig last month you’ll have seen her signing at that. Her signing journey began in lockdown - she was introduced to sign language through learning to sign a song and was completely drawn in. That led to her performance signing at her previous choir’s concerts, signing for a band at an accessible music festival, meeting local Deaf communities at deaf club events and turning that lockdown learning into qualifications. 4 years later she has BSL Level 3 under her belt and is now part of a team running Smile & Sign - a weekly fun, tongue in cheek, lively sign song session on Zoom to mostly 80s songs.
Smile & Sign has encouraged many people to go on to learn more about sign language and deaf awareness and Jeanette would love to share a taster of it with Choir on The Green members. It’s all about opening the door to taking steps towards bridging the gap between deaf and hearing communities. And it’s all about learning through fun.
The event will be raising money for the charity Hearing Dogs for Deaf People.
£5 per person (or extra donations obviously welcome)
Come and give it a go! RSVP here.
